SUMMARY:The Carlisle Indian Industrial School and the Craigheads
DESCRIPTION:Event is free\, but pre-registration is required. \n\n\n\nNovember 16\, 2025\, 2 pm\, Jim Gerencser and Kate Theimer \n\n\n\n More than a decade of work by the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center has made new insights possible – both large and small – about the history and effects of the school on indigenous students. This talk will present a brief overview on the school’s history based on the most up-to-date understanding of this extensive documentation. Particular attention will be given to the school’s “outing” system\, which involved students living with and working for host families\, including the Craighead family. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded in 1879\, and closed in 1918. \n\n\n\nRegister here \n\n\n\nJim Gerencser is the Associate Dean for Archives and Special Collections at Dickinson College in Carlisle. He is also the Director of the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center. \n\n\n\nKate Theimer is a historian and writer\, working as a consultant to the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center\, as well as the author of two books on her research. She is the curator of the 2025 exhibit\, “Contrasting Photos: Behind and in Front of the Camera at the Carlisle Indian School” at the Cumberland County Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Third Annual Falconry Day at Craighead House
DESCRIPTION:Twins John and Frank Craighead Jr. were integral in introducing the sport of falconry into the US when they were in their teens in the 1930s. Summers spent at Craighead House training and flying their hawks turned into a National Geographic magazine article\, and a book on falconry\, creating “falconry” friends from around the world\, including an Indian prince from Bhavnagar\, India. Bapa\, as he was known to his family and friends\, visited Craighead House in 1939\, a special invitation from his friends the twins. \n\n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Monarch Mavin: Citizen Scientists and the Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:Butterflies: how do we know what we know about these amazing insects? Two hundred years before Darwin\, and before modern museums\, a young woman in the late 1600s was the first to document the complete lifecycle of a butterfly\, called metamorphosis. Through observation and detailed paintings\, she became one of the first “citizen scientists” of her era. Join us on a voyage of discovery as we travel back to that amazing time\, from Amsterdam during tulip mania to Dutch Surinam with naturalist and renowned painter\, Maria Sybilla Merian. On the way\, learn how you too can help pollinators by becoming a citizen scientist today\, as Maria did almost 400 years ago. View her actual paintings of pollinators and their host plants\, which were so detailed and correct that they were used by Linneaus\, the father of modern taxonomy. This talk is part of our “A Talk in the Garden” series of gardening talks. \n\n\n\nNoted author\, photographer\, and public speaker on native gardens\, Heather Andrews works with homeowners and businesses to create sustainable native pollinator habitats. During the growing season\, you will find her in her pollinator waystation\, Cat-a-pillar Haven\, in Mechanicsburg. Her educational videologs are found on Facebook at Thoughtful Gardener\, and on her YouTube channel\, Garden Thoughtfully. Heather is also a certified Master Gardener\, and Watershed Steward. \n\n\n\nRegister HERE.

Professor Douglas’ talk is part of our “A Talk in the Garden” series of gardening talks. \n\n\n\nMaggie Douglas\, PhD\, is an assistant professor of Environmental Science at Dickinson College in Carlisle. She studies the ecology of agricultural landscapes with an emphasis on the roles of insects as friend and foe to food production.
