SUMMARY:Land Restoration Workshop: Live Staking with Horn Farm Center
DESCRIPTION:Live stakes are stem cuttings from trees and shrubs. When planted or “staked” into the ground\, these cuttings are capable of growing into new plants. This form of propagation is an evolved trait for many woody plants in streamside and wetland areas\, since unstable conditions are an ecological norm in these habitats. For folks who are tending\, protecting\, and restoring natural landscapes–whether at home or on the trail–live stakes offer a promising and accessible alternative for bolstering native vegetation and reversing degradation. As plants establish roots and grow\, they mitigate soil erosion\, keep pollutants from entering waterways\, and provide a myriad of other benefits. In this hands-on program\, you will explore a live stake “nursery” at the Horn Farm Center while learning about the science of live stakes\, which plants and habitats are best suited for this restoration technique\, and how to harvest\, store\, and plant stem cuttings. \n\n\n\nRegister and find more information HERE.

SUMMARY:Trail Challenge 25K Hike/Run
DESCRIPTION:Challenge yourself to complete these arduous miles of steep climbs and rocky terrain punctuated with fantastic vistas and scenic forest hollows. The course is great for both trail runners pushing for their best times on rugged trails and hikers aiming to complete the strenuous challenge before the evening finish cutoff. \n\n\n\nWhat’s in store for 2024? \n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Trail Challenge 25K runs north-to-south following the route introduced last year. You’ll start on the course from Pequea Creek Campground\, take on the harsh ascent to the Pinnacle Overlook\, continue down into Kelly’s Run\, and cross the finish line in Susquehannock State Park. Picnic and exhibitors will be located at the second pavilion in the park.\n\n\n\nRace-day check-in 6:15-7:15am at Susquehannock State Park.  \n\n\n\nShuttles depart at 7:30am from Susquehannock State Park to the start-line at Pequea on race-day.  Finish the hike back at your car. No more waiting on the shuttle in the afternoon.\n\n\n\nThe Iron Mettle Medal returns. We’ve partnered with Central Pennsylvania Conservancy’s again to bring you this double challenge for a second year in a row. Runners and hikers who finish both the KTA Trail Challenge 25K and the CPC Ironmaster’s Challenge 15K\, 20Mile\, or 50K will receive this exclusive award.\n\n\n\nAll participants receive: a hearty meal at the finish line picnic\, a Trail Challenge long sleeve tee\, and a one-year membership to Keystone Trails Association.
