DESCRIPTION:Begin your first day of 2026 by putting your best foot forward during this nationwide annual hike! Meet us at 8 am in the Kings Gap Hollow day use area\, halfway up the mountain. The hike will be a relatively flat 2 miles involving roots and rocks on some parts of the trail and one steep hill.  \n\n\n\nIn celebration of America 250\, as we hike\, you will learn about the history of the park\, including a stop at a charcoal hearth to see firsthand what that area looks like and hear about what happened there over 100 years ago. Please wear bright orange and sturdy footwear. Snacks and water are also recommended. All are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:It’s not just students who get to begin a new season of learning\, but educators get to do that too! Join us for an educator workshop featuring the newly revised Pennsylvania Songbirds curriculum & activity guide. PA Songbirds is a hands-on\, interdisciplinary K-8 educators’ resource and activity guide with over 40 lessons\, pre-made student sheets\, and organizers that sort each lesson by topic and grade level. Lessons are designed to introduce and enhance the learners’ knowledge of observation and identification of songbirds\, bird biology\, habitat\, migration\, and more\, while helping teachers meet PA STEELS standards.Our three educators are excited to welcome classroom teachers and non-formal educators (including\, but not limited to\, pre-service teachers\, scout leaders\, homeschool educators\, pre-service teachers\, youth leaders and naturalists) or anyone else who would like to engage children in science and our environment through the wonderful world of birds! All participants will receive the newly updated PA Songbirds Activity Guide. Five (5.0) Act 48 hours are available to educators holding Pennsylvania public school certification. \n\n\n\nMorning refreshments with snack and lunch are provided. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Kings Gap for an all-levels yoga class with a spectacular view on the top of the mountain\, led by Ally Gregg and Maurice Sipos. \n\n\n\nClasses are held on the Mansion terrace and are appropriate for beginners. They include breathing and meditation\, and end with a guided relaxation. Modifications will be offered. There is no better way to reset your nervous system and practice mindfulness than in the great outdoors! \n\n\n\nPlease bring your own mats/blankets and any other tools\, such as blocks\, that you would like to use. \n\n\n\nIn the event of rain\, the class moves to the pavilion just across from the Education Center. We take pride in making this event a fun\, tasty\, and meaningful program you won’t want to miss. \n\n\n\nThis year:  The South Mountain Conservation Landscape is built around our incredible core of public land\, and we are so excited for this event to feature the Kings Gap Environmental Education Center. Come for the incredible views\, rich history\, and to learn about newly completed projects at this treasured resource. \n\n\n\nRegistration includes an interactive networking hour\, full local lunch\, and entrance to the celebration program: inspirational speaker(s)\, award of the Spirit of South Mountain\, award of upcoming Mini-Grant and Flex Grant projects\, and an opportunity to connect and celebrate with friends and colleagues\, new and old. \n\n\n\nIn addition to hearing from our host\, Cumberland County\, guest speakers Julie Vastine and Dr. Allen Dieterich-Ward will explore the impact of local advocacy and action in our community. Those working in the conservation fields are experiencing increased challenges that affirm the importance of working together locally to ensure our home is healthy and accessible for generations yet to come. Both of these speakers have a long history of making change in the South Mountain Region. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Kings Gap for the 2nd annual Kings Gap Highland Games\, as part of the Summer Celtic Celebration! There is no cost to watch the games. Tickets are only for those wishing to learn and compete in the games. This event is meant for novice throwers. \n\n\n\nFor High School Track and Field Throwers\, this will provide a unique summer training and competition venue to advance your skills in a new way. \n\n\n\nFor people of all ages\, simply joining the training session allows you to challenge yourself in feats of strength you never thought possible\, while also joining the elite ranks of the Caber Club! The sense of accomplishment by simply tossing your first caber or putting your first stone is an extraordinary feeling\, which will boost your self-confidence. \n\n\n\nTraining Session:The Highland Games Academy out of Gettysburg will provide a training session on the Caber Toss\, Weight for Distance\, and Stone Put beginning at 7:45 on 23 August at Kings Gap State Park.
