Allison-Antrim Museum Speaker Meeting: Black History Month

The Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle will hold its monthly speaker meeting on Thursday, February 8, 2024, in the German Bank Barn beginning at 7 p.m.  The facility is wheelchair accessible.

This month’s speaker is Dr. Emilie Amt for Black History Month in February. What was the Civil War like for the thousands of African Americans, free and enslaved, who lived in southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland? This talk will explore their experiences as civilians, the challenges, and dangers they faced, and how life changed for them during the war. Copies of Dr. Amt’s book will be available for sale and signing after the talk.

Dr. Emilie Amt is an award-winning writer of African American history in western Maryland and an emeritus professor of history at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. Her most recent book is Black Antietam: African Americans and the Civil War in Sharpsburg. She lives in Hagerstown and is currently writing a book about slavery in Washington County.
